Le patient doit être mieux informé, pour pouvoir comparer plus facilement les produits et services disponibles en santé publique et privée. Une plus grande transparence et le savoir assurent au patient une position de force. Grâce à Internet, le pouvoir peut changer à nouveau de camp et repasser du prestataire de service de santé (administration hospitalière, assurance, HMO, médecin de caisse... ) au patient et à son médecin.

L'équilibre dans la relation entre un médecin et un patient, est maintenu par le fait que le médecin est celui qui est qualifié pour évaluer la qualité et, ce qui est encore plus important, la pertinence de n'importe quelle information médicale. Aucun livre et site internet ne peuvent donc remplacer une consultation chez un bon médecin, mais ils peuvent vous aider à vous rendre chez lui en égal et obtenir beaucoup plus de votre rendez-vous. En pratiquant ainsi vous devrez réfléchir plus sur les choix qui s'offrent à vous et serez confronté à d'avantage d'incertitudes, mais il est certain que les patients bien informés et participant aux décisions qui concernent leur santé, s'en portent beaucoup mieux.

La recherche montre que 50% des patients ne prennent pas correctement les médicaments prescrits par leur médecin.
